Carnival unveils plans for first ever roller-coaster at sea

Carnival Cruise Line has unveiled plans for the world’s first ever roller coaster at sea on board its new ship, Mardi Gras.

The ship, described as the ‘ultimate playground at sea for fun seekers of all ages’, makes its debut in 2020.

Riders on the coaster, called BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster, can choose their own speed at launch and can get up to speeds of nearly 40 miles an hour.

In motorcycle-like vehicles, they will tackle twists, turns and drops on a track 187 feet above sea level.

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said BOLT is the ‘cornerstone of innovations and features’ being designed for Mardi Gras.

"Mardi Gras will be our most innovative ship ever with some truly special features and attractions, highlighted by BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea," she said.

"BOLT will continue the tradition of Carnival providing exciting new ways for our guests to ‘Choose Fun.’ We are so thrilled to introduce this one-of-a-kind, game-changing, exhilarating attraction – our guests are going to love it."

Itinerary information will be revealed early next month and additional details about the ship’s features will be announced throughout the year.

Construction starts on a second XL-class ship in 2020 for delivery in 2022, which is the cruise line’s 50th anniversary.
