Celebrating 270 years of Mozart with new immersive experience in Vienna
As the classical music world marks the 270th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Vienna—a city central to understanding his genius—is offering a fresh and contemporary take on the milestone.
MYTHOS MOZART, the city’s newest interactive attraction, is set in the historic location where Mozart spent the final year of his life. It was here that he composed The Magic Flute, the Clarinet Concerto, and the Requiem, before his death.
Mozart lived in Vienna from 1781 until 1791, a decade that marked the peak of his creative output and saw him establish himself as an independent composer, pianist, and teacher.
The new attraction presents Mozart not just as a historical figure, but as a living creative force. MYTHOS MOZART blends music, visual art, and immersive technology to explore his inner world, creative process, and the lasting emotional power of his work.
Four internationally acclaimed studios and artists were commissioned to design five distinct rooms and installations, each offering a different artistic interpretation of Mozart. Together, they create a captivating, multi-sensory journey through his life and music.
Highlights include:
Requiem – Mozart’s Death
More than 1,500 LED candles move in sync with Mozart’s final composition, creating a deeply emotional tribute to his legacy. The installation was created by Studio Waldemeyer, known for its innovative use of light and technology.
Vienna 1791 – The City of Mozart
A 45-meter, 360-degree animated panorama transports visitors back to Mozart’s Vienna, vividly recreating the city and its atmosphere. This installation was developed by Arx Anima.
World Music – A Little Night Music
Visitors can interact with A Little Night Music using instruments from around the world, blending global sounds with Mozart’s compositions. The experience was created by filmmaker Arash T. Riahi and the team at Golden Girls Film.
Genius – Mozart Composes
Light and sound installations visualize the neural activity behind Mozart’s creative mind, also designed by Studio Waldemeyer.
The Magic Flute – Mozart Forever
Turkish-American new media artist Refik Anadol uses artificial intelligence and vast datasets to create immersive digital environments inspired by Mozart’s legacy. The installation explores how technology interprets Mozart through the collective digital memory of his work.
Mozart’s deep immersion in Vienna’s vibrant musical culture—along with his engagement with Enlightenment ideas, Freemasonry, and theater—shaped his evolving operatic style and creative output.
For scholars, performers, and dedicated music lovers, MYTHOS MOZART offers not just a modern reinterpretation, but a compelling new lens through which to experience the enduring brilliance of Mozart.
