Celebrities reveal airport baggage thefts
Four baggage checkers at New York airports are being charged with theft after two celebrities complained items had gone missing from their luggage.
According to The Times, chat show host Joan Rivers and comedian Chevy Chase both found that their possessions had been stolen after they had transited New York; both of them complained to police, who launched a “sting” operation.
Police “planted” jewellery and cash in luggage, and followed the luggage with hidden cameras. One checker at JFK airport and three at La Guardia were arrested soon afterwards; they reportedly face prison sentences of up to seven years.
Richard Brown, Queens District Attorney, is quoted as saying: “It is troubling that individuals responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our airlines would engage in this kind of conduct.”
