Celebrity to build “landmark” liner

Celebrity Cruises is to build a “new generation” $641 million ship with the option of constructing a second vessel, the company has revealed.

It claimed the 2,850 capacity ship, due for delivery in autumn 2008, will launch a “new class of landmark” liner with more than 90% of the staterooms outside cabins and a larger size of standard rooms than the industry norm.

Other distinctive features are planned and will be unveiled in the coming months, Celebrity said.

It added capacity will increase by 2.8% next year, 7.4% in 2007 and 7.2% in 2008.

“The announcement clearly demonstrates the company’s continuing development to its growth and innovative development of the Celebrity brand,” said president Dan Hanrahan.

The ship will be built by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft.
