Charter flights on RAF planes
The British travelling public could soon be flying abroad on RAF planes specially converted for charter flights.
Britain’s biggest-ever private finance initiative, which the Daily Mail says is worth £13 billion over the next 30 years, means that the jets will actually be owned by a private company but will be rented to the Air Force.
When they are not required for military purposes, they will be used as passenger jets – but they are also capable of being fitted with special hoses and pumps that will allow mid-air refuelling.
The Mail reports that passengers will not realise they are on a military plane – even if they are capable of being converted back to their military mode with a couple of days’ notice.
