Chinese authorities have asked for more time to consider over the impending formation of the world’s largest hospitality group.
The Marriott-Starwood Hotels merger has been held up as China’s regulator extended its review period of the proposed deal by 60 days.
The two companies did not give any reason for the extension requested by China’s Ministry of Commerce but maintain there are no anti-competitive issues flagged by the Chinese authorities.
The combined portfolios of Marriott and Starwood would also make it the largest in China with a 4% market share.
Antitrust authorities have already cleared the transaction in Europe and North America.
