China shuts ‘too popular’ glass bridge tourist attraction

Friday, 05 Sep, 2016 0
The world’s highest and longest glass bottom bridge has been forced to close just two weeks after its grand opening.

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge has become a victim of its own success.

The bridge can safetly accommodate 8,000 people a day or 660 at any one time, but up to 10 times that number have been visiting on a daily basis.

"We’re overwhelmed by the volume of visitors," a spokesperson told CNN.

The spokesman said there was no damage to the bridge but the closure was required due to the ‘urgency to improve and update’.

The company gave no indication when the bridge would reopen.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon plans to update infrastructure, including car parking, and improve the ticket-booking system.

The bridge stretches 430 meters across a 300-metre deep gorge in the Zhangjiajie Park, which was thought to be the inspiration behind the scenery in the sci-fi movie Avatar.
