China will be world’s biggest theme park market by 2020
China is on track to become the world’s theme park leader within three years.
That’s the view of the 2017 World Travel Market Global Travel Trends Report by Euromonitor which says China will surpass Japan and the US by 2020.
Another report by Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town Holding Company, which is a sponsor unit of the China Tourist Attractions Association, also supported that forecast.
It said the country’s theme parks attracted about 200 million visitors in 2016.
Euromonitor said annual retail sales revenue at China theme parks will reach 12bn yuan (about US$1.8billion) by 2020.
However the Euromonitor report also notes several factors holding the industry back, including substandard design and planning, and financing issues.
Data from the Themed Entertainment Association says 13 of the top 20 theme parks in Asia are located in China.
