Chinese city to test all nine million residents after new Covid cases

After a new cluster of Covid cases, a Chinese city will implement a mass testing program of all nine million residents.

Qingdao city aims to test everyone in just five days, state-run Global Times reported.

Qingdao reported six new confirmed cases and six new asymptomatic cases at the weekend.

The cluster was traced to the Qingdao Chest Hospital, which is a facility used to treat imported Covid-19 cases, the municipal health commission said.

It will conduct nucleic acid testing in five districts over three days, and across the whole city within five days.

As of early Wednesday, it said more than four million tests had been carried out.

However, there are concerns a city-wide testing program may not be enough.

Qingdao received more than four million out of town visitors during the recent Golden Week holidays.

Authorities have locked down the Qingdao Chest Hospital and some residential communities where the Covid-19 positive cases live, while it undergoes contract tracing.

Qingdao had not suffered a major outbreak during the pandemic, with just 65 confirmed cases and one death so far.
