Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism has reported that 98 percent of its members are open for business.

No other areas of New Zealand are affected following last Saturday’s earthquake.

Travellers who have bookings for travel to Christchurch and Canterbury over the next few weeks are advised to keep their bookings, and maintain regular contact with their travel providers for the latest updates.

Regular tourism updates will be carried on www.newzealand.com and www.christchurchnz.com

Christchurch International Airport, along with car hire and campervan companies are up and running.

Areas around central Christchurch including Hamner Springs, Akaroa, Kaikoura and the local ski fields are unaffected, as is much of the Canterbury region.

Tourism New Zealand CEO Kevin Bowler said though the city was recovering well, safety remained the priority.

”Christchurch city is recovering well after the earthquake. For safety reasons, Civil Defence still has a cordon in place around a few blocks of the central city but the remainder of the city is accessible. The cordon is being reviewed daily.

“Virtually all tourism operators in the Christchurch region are open, but visitors are advised to contact their travel agents or accommodation providers before arriving in the city,” Bowler said.

New Zealand’s Value Tours has confirmed that holidaymakers booked and currently travelling with the company, have not been adversely affected by Saturday’s 7.1 magnitude quake.

“Our coach tours are running as usual, and while the TranzAlpine Railway remains temporarily closed, we will ensure all our passengers can continue their holiday itinerary by coach for this leg,” said Value Tours general manager, David Ovendale.

“It is as close to business as usual as it can be, given the circumstances,” he said.
