Co-op to sell euros at food counters
The Co-operative Group has launched a pilot scheme to sell euros at the checkouts of its food stores.
The Group’s travel business, Travelcare, has worked in partnership with its food retailing operation to put pre-packed euros into 18 food stores in the Nottingham area.
Travelcare’s sales and operations manager for travel money, Jonathan Hindley said: “With an increasing number of people taking European trips at short notice, the availability of euros at their local food outlet puts new meaning into the phrase ‘convenience store’.
“We will be monitoring the results of the trial carefully over the next few months but with 1700 stores in The Co-operative Food retailing network, we believe the scheme has significant potential.”
The stores are selling euros in packs of 50 and 100. Travellers who take unused euro notes back to Travelcare branches can change them free of charge.
