‘Crude incendiary device’ found on plane
A “crude incendiary device” has been discovered on an aircraft at Sydney airport – but authorities believe it was planted by an airline worker.
The device, described on the BBC News website as a “cardboard roll stuffed with explosive and attached to a fireworks sparkler”, was discovered in the hold of a Virgin Blue aircraft after it landed after an internal flight from Queensland.
It was reportedly found by a baggage handler who subsequently set off security alarms by carrying it into the airport’s terminal.
The carrier’s commercial operations director David Huttner is quoted as saying: “It was clearly placed there by someone who had access to the airfield. It was not something that goes boom, it was something that burns, which means somebody had to be there to light it.”
