Cruise lines steer clear of Middle East
Further outbreaks of violence in the Middle East and North Africa have prompted cruise lines to divert ships away from the region.
Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas cancelled a scheduled overnight stop at the Egyptian port of Alexandria with stops in Messina, Sicily and Valletta in Malta.
Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth also swapped a stop in Alexandria for Rhodes in Greece.
Holland America Line cancelled a call at La Goulette in Tunisia last week, stopping in Sardinia instead.
Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises and Princess Cruises said there were monitoring the situation in the region but have not altered their itineraries.
The UK Foreign Office is not advising against all travel to Egypt or Tunisia, but it is urging visitors to be cautious following the outbreak of violent protests against a low-budget American anti-Islamic film which have swept across the region, leading to the deaths of four Americans, including the US ambassador, in Sudan.
Australia’s Smart Traveller website has maintained the level of travel advice for Tunisia as "Exercise a High Degree of Caution".
Meanwhile, security has been increased at France’s interests abroad after a French satirical magazine published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
