Cruise ships reroute as Tropical Storm Dorian bears down on Caribbean

Wednesday, 27 Aug, 2019 0

Cruise lines have begun rerouting ships and ports calls have been scrapped as Tropical Storm Dorian builds toward hurricane strength in the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean has already changed the course of three ships due to Dorian with Allure of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas moving west to avoid rough seas and sustained winds of up to 60 miles per hour.

"We continue to monitor the path of Tropical Storm Dorian and potential impact to our vessels and will communicate any scheduling changes to our guests," said the cruise line’s spokesperson Melissa Charbonneau.

The Disney Fantasy is also shifting from the Eastern to the Western Caribbean.

Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line are monitoring the weather system but announced no itinerary changes yet.

Tropical storm warnings are in place for Martinique, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The storm is forecast to bring between three to six inches of rain from Martinique to St. Vincent.

The National Hurricane Center says the storm could reach as far as the Florida coastline.

"While uncertainty is high, wind and rain impacts are possible in the Bahamas and Florida later this week and this weekend. Residents in these areas should monitor the progress of Dorian and ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place," it said in a late Monday bulletin.
