DC more inspiring than Disney?

Tourists consider Washington DC a more exciting and inspiring place to visit — especially for families — compared to New York City and Orlando, according to a new survey conducted by local tourism officials.

The Washington Convention & Tourism Corp. hopes to use the study to develop a new brand that will draw in more visitors, says the Washington Business Journal.

Some study highlights:

  • Fifty-nine percent of US respondents “strongly agreed” that the city is a great place to hold a conference or convention. They deemed Chicago equally as appealing and New York City a close second at 57%.
  • On average, 51% perceived New York, Boston, Chicago and Orlando as hot destinations for entertainment and nightlife, compared to 41% for D.C.
  • Of people who had visited DC in the last two years, 71% characterized it as an inspiring place and 66% thought it was welcoming to minorities, compared to 50% for New York and 54% for Orlando.
  • Of the Canadians surveyed, most visit DC because they think it’s an attractive destination for adults; the same was true for visitors from the U.K.
