Delays expected to Spain as summer season starts

Airlines face delays to Spanish services this weekend due to continued strike action hitting the start of the summer holiday season.

Air traffic controllers plan to strike on Saturday between 10am and 1pm and on Sunday between 5pm and 8pm.

It follows previous strikes on the weekend of July 11th and 12th as well as four days of partial stoppages in June.

EasyJet said: "We plan to operate our normal schedule and like all airlines flying to and from Spain, we expect to be impacted by moderate delays during this period as a result of the strike.

"We recommend that all customers flying to or from Spain on those dates check the status of their flight on our Flight Tracker page before going to the airport.

"Although this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise to any affected passengers for an inconvenience and would like to reassure them we are doing all possible to minimise any disruption as a result of the industrial action."

Enaire, which runs Spanish air traffic control, said it expects to run 80% of services during the strike periods while talks continue with the union.

The long-running dispute dates back to the dismissal of a controller in Santiago de Compostela for his role in wildcat strikes in 2010.

The strikes resulted in massive disruption and the military was called in to keep Spanish air traffic moving.
