Delta’s proposed joint venture with WestJet gets Canadian approval
Delta Air Lines has passed the first regulatory hurdle in its proposed joint venture transborder tie-up with Canada’s WestJet Airlines.
Canada’s Competition Bureau has given the green light to the JV, stating it does not have any anti-trust concerns.
The transborder agreement was signed last year and expands their current codeshare to coordinate current flight schedules and plan network expansion together.
The carriers currently codeshare on more than 1,500 US-Canada flights weekly.
"Today’s clearance is an important step towards satisfying the conditions necessary to implement the proposed transborder joint venture," said Westjet chief Ed Sims.
It will lead to more consumer choice, connectivity and economic benefits, Sims said.
The alliance is necessary to meet the challenge of Air Canada which operates nearly a quarter of US-Canada transborder air traffic.
The joint venture proposal still needs to gain approval from US authorities.
