Destinations International Conference: Global gathering of DMOs
The 2025 Destinations International Annual Conference in Chicago notched a key milestone, drawing over 2,000 delegates from 28 countries.
It included representatives from Ukraine and Israel.
Taking place until July 11, it underscores how vital global collaboration is as the industry faces mounting challenges and opportunities.
Don Welsh, CEO and President of Destinations International, opened the conference by welcoming both domestic and international media.
Welsh emphasised the obstacles facing both the United States, and the global market are not insurmountable. He urged the media to view these as opportunities for innovation and collective action.
A central topic will be the drastic reduction in funding for Brand USA, the nation’s destination marketing organisation.
With its annual budget slashed by 80% to just $20 million, the organisation faces unprecedented constraints in its ability to promote the United States in overseas markets.
This cutback is not only a domestic issue but also a reflection of a wider trend affecting tourism boards and DMOs worldwide.
Many countries and regions are tightening their belts, forcing DMOs to rethink their strategies for promotion, stewardship, and marketing, he said.
The reduction in resources has led to:
Increased competition among destinations for a shrinking pool of international travellers.
Greater emphasis on digital marketing and data-driven strategies.
A renewed focus on sustainable tourism and stewardship.
International Solidarity and Innovation
The presence of delegates from 28 countries, including those from regions experiencing significant geopolitical challenges, highlights the spirit of international solidarity at the conference, especially with the inclusion of Ukraine and Israel.
Looking ahead
Delegates will be engaging in discussions on how to overcome financial constraints, leverage technology, and foster sustainable growth.
The optimism expressed by Don Welsh set a hopeful tone, suggesting collaboration and innovation will help the travel industry emerge stronger than ever.
