Disney laying off theme park workers later this month
Walt Disney Co will start furloughing theme park workers later this month.
Non-union park employees will be stood down from April 19, the company said.
These employees will still get full healthcare benefits and can continue using the Disney Aspire education programs.
Disney didn’t say exactly how many workers will be placed on furlough.
Management is expected to meet union officials today to discuss arrangements on pay and possible furloughs for unionized employees.
"Over the last few weeks, mandatory decrees from government officials have shut down a majority of our businesses. Disney employees have received full pay and benefits during this time, and we’ve committed to paying them through April 18, for a total of five additional weeks of compensation," a statement said.
"However, with no clear indication of when we can restart our businesses, we’re forced to make the difficult decision to take the next step and furlough employees whose jobs aren’t necessary at this time."
After complaints from annual passholders, the company has now agreed to waive payments for guests who pay monthly for annual passes while the parks remain closed.
Guests who have paid in full will have their passes’ expiration date extended.
