Disney offers smart TV travel planning
A newly launched smart TV app by Disney offers travelers the ability to plan vacations at theme parks, hotels and on cruise ships using their TV remote control.
The app is free and available at the Samsung smart TV app store, and from April on Blu-ray players and the LG smart TV app store.
The app curates multimedia content from the different Disney brands such as videos, photos, interactive theme park maps and social media content.
There is also a trivia quiz and it allows viewers to request more information via email.
The app was developed by BrightLine, a New York-based interactive television design company which has worked on similar projects in the past for companies such as American Express.
According to Brad Baker, director of digital marketing at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, smart TV technology is "a really interesting space for us, since there is now a new way for us to be able to tell our story."
He also said the app will only be available in the US market but may be extended to other smart TV systems if it proves popular.
Smart TV ownership is set to rise to around 37 million by the year-end but this still only represents around 10% of total TVs in use.
Eric Smith, an analyst for consultants Strategy Analytics, said the app may have limited effectiveness as it does not offer an in-app purchase option to book vacations and travel packages through a smart TV.
