Does the EU impede development of Sustainable Tourism?

OK “Sustainable” is a big buzzword in each and every EU-funded project, but do we practice what we preach? Sustainable Tourism needs to be Culturally Sustainable, Environmentally Sustainable – and ECONOMICALLY SUSTAINABLE to be really feasable. In other words, participants in sustainable tourism need to make sustainable profits to keep on doing it.

Sustainable tourism projects can easily live in the miniculture of funded development, but when they get out into the hard commercial world, it’s a different story. Sustainable tourism needs to make sustainable profit to live a sustainable life – and that implies legislation.

Here’s a start – many tour operators and agents will not promote eco and adventure holidays due to their high level of liability. Maybe this should change?

Maybe the EU could provide funds for commercial tour operators to market these sorts of holidays to enable the general public to get close to nature and undersdtand what sustainability is all about?
