Dozens of tourists victims of a bar explosion in exclusive Crans-Montana resort on New Year
An explosion ripped through a crowded bar in the Swiss alpine resort of Crans-Montana shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day, killing several people and leaving numerous others injured, authorities said Thursday.
The blast occurred at around 1:30 a.m. local time inside a bar located in the center of the famed Valais ski resort, according to Gaëtan Lathion, spokesperson for the Valais cantonal police. The incident happened as celebrations were underway to welcome the new year, with more than 100 people reportedly inside the venue at the time of the explosion.
Police confirmed that there were “several fatalities and multiple injured.” More precised figures were communicated mid-day on Thursday. News reported at least 40 people killed and 100 others injured. Emergency services rushed to the scene, including cantonal and municipal police forces, firefighters, and multiple medical helicopters. The injured were treated on site and transported to nearby hospitals as needed.
By the early morning hours, authorities said the situation was under control. The affected area was secured, and an investigation was launched to determine the cause of the explosion, which remains unknown. Officials have not ruled out any possibilities and said further information would be released as soon as it becomes available.
Local media outlets Blick and Rhône FM were the first to report the explosion, prompting widespread concern in the popular holiday destination, which attracts large numbers of international visitors during the winter season.
In response to the tragedy, authorities set up a helpline for relatives and loved ones of those affected. Family members seeking information can contact the dedicated hotline at 084 811 21 17.
Crans-Montana, known for its ski slopes, nightlife, and New Year’s festivities, was bustling with tourists at the time of the incident. The explosion has cast a shadow over the resort and the wider region as Switzerland begins the new year in mourning.
The Alpine resort is known for its luxurious lifestyle which attracts celebrities such as George Clooney or Justin Timberlake.
Police urged the public to avoid speculation and to allow investigators to carry out their work. Further updates are expected as emergency responders and forensic teams continue to assess the scene and gather evidence.
