Dull Canada can’t attract visitors
Quiet, safe and boring. And that’s why more people don’t visit Canada, says a recent report.
The number of tourists traveling abroad is up globally by 4.5%, but down more than 4% in Canada, said a United Nations survey of the global tourism industry.
“We are finding that young people are driving the world tourism market, but the image Canada has might not appeal to them very much,” John Kester, chief of the World Tourism Organization that produces the study, told Canada.com.
Canada is viewed as expensive, difficult to enter and unexciting, he said.
Canada is aware of its image problem and is spending $75 million a year to promote itself.
“We find that people feel very positively towards Canada as a country, but they don’t necessarily know how they would translate that into a vacation experience,” said Michele McKenzie, CEO of the Canadian Tourism Commission.
