Earthquake hits Japan days after typhoon
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck Japan just days after it was hit by a major typhoon.
According to local reports, at least eight people have been killed and about 40 are missing as the earthquake, which occurred in Hokkaido in northern Japan, triggered landslides.
At least 10 people were killed when Jebi, the strongest typhoon in 25 years, caused widespread damage and disruption earlier this week.
In its updated travel advice today, the FCO warned: "Transportation throughout the island has been disrupted, including the airport. If you are in Hokkaido, or are planning to travel to the area, please be careful of aftershocks, follow the advice of the local authorities, follow local news, and check with the transportation companies for any changes or cancelations of schedule."
For emergency consular assistance, call (81) 3-5211-1100.
Osaka’s Kansai International airport has also been closed since Tuesday due to severe flooding.
