EasyJet confirms Air Berlin deal
EasyJet has bought part of Air Berlin’s operations at the German capital’s Tegel airport for €40 million (£35.3 million).
It will lease up to 25 Airbus A320 aircraft and take off and landing slots at Tegel from the German carrier, which has fallen into administration.
The deal, which has yet to be approved by regulators, will see easyJet operating German domestic flights as well as flights to the rest of Europe from Tegel airport.
While easyJet will operate a reduced schedule for the winter, it said it will beef up its services from next summer.
It already operates flights from Berlin’s Schonefeld airport.
The deal, which is expected to get approval from German authorities by December, will rescue the jobs of around 1,000 Air Berlin pilots and crew, who will be employed by easyJet on German contracts.
