Easyjet in Glasgow expansion
Easyjet has announced the launch of four new routes from Glasgow in an expansion plan that will see its capacity at the airport rise by almost a fifth.
The no frills carrier will introduce daily departures to Alicante and Malaga on July 7, daily departures to Schonefeld, Berlin on May 3 and Saturday departures to Palma on May 20.
Easyjet predicted it would carry 300,000 passengers on the routes in the first 12 months. It brings the number of routes offered by the airline from Glasgow to nine.
BAA Scotland managing director Stephen Baxter said: “We have worked for some time with Easyjet on a deal that would allow them to expand from Glasgow.
“There is growing demand for direct international flights from Glasgow and we believe there is scope for further expansion.”
VisitScotland said the Berlin flight in particular will bring significant benefits for the economy.
“We have felt the lack of having a direct service from Germany’s biggest city,” said Glasgow area director Lesley Craig. “Germany is our second largest international tourism market bringing in around £78 million into Scotland each year.”
