Some 2000 passengers holidaying on the MSC Opera cruise ship are being flown home from Stockholm after engine failure called a halt to its Baltics cruise.
The ship was without power after the engine failure on Friday and internet reports say bathrooms were inoperable, causing poor hygiene.
The operator despatched tug boats on Sunday as the ship drifted close to the Swedish island of Gotland.
All passengers have been given a voucher for the cost of the cruise which they can redeem until December next year.
A statement from the operator said: “Tugboats have assisted the ship while technicians of [ship yard] STX continue their effort to resolve the electrical problem.
“Not being able to offer to its guests the usual standards of service, MSC is organising the repatriation of all guests tomorrow from Stockholm.
