English tourism awards finalists unveiled
Tourism’s commitment to sustainability and the environment will be recognised for the first time in the 2008 Enjoy England Awards for Excellence.
A new sustainability tourism category is one of three new awards introduced, which also include a tourism experience award and travel journalist award.
Finalists for the awards in 14 categories – excluding the journalism category – have been published by Enjoy England following the selection of regional winners. There is also a national outstanding contribution to tourism award.
The 19th annual awards ceremony is to take place on April 23 in Liverpool, to mark the city being 2008 European Capital for Culture.
Businesses short-listed in the sustainability category are: Strattons Hotel, Norfolk; Cottage Lodge, Hampshire; National Maritime Museum, Greenwich; Mocktree Barns Holiday Cottages, Shropshire; Fern Cottage, South Gloucestershire; Attenborough Nature Centre, Nottingham; National Wildflower Centre, Liverpool; Kilhope, the North of England Mining Museum, County Durham; and YHA Lockton, The Old School, Pickering.
Hugh Taylor, chairman of VisitEngland, said: “It is a very exciting time for English tourism and we are delighted to be in Liverpool at the start of their celebrations as European Capital of Culture.
“These awards are all about celebrating quality and excellence in tourism, and it is vital we continue to drive English tourism businesses to strive for excellence – and that we showcase those who reach those high standards.”
