Etihad Airways scrapping Dallas flights
Etihad Airways is dumping Dallas Fort Worth from its route network – and it’s all down to DFW based American Airlines.
Etihad cites American Airlines’ decision to end the airlines’ code-share agreement as the main reason.
It will end Abu Dhabi-DFW flights from March 25, 2018 when codesharing ends and hinted at possible further adjustments.
"The cancellation of the Dallas route is one of several adjustments that we are making to our US network in 2018 in order to improve system profitability," said Etihad CEO Peter Baumgartner.
"Further changes are possible as we monitor the full impact of the American Airlines codeshare cancellation on summer 2018 bookings."
Etihad said the route had performed well since launching it nearly three years ago.
The initial three times a week service was upgraded to daily service earlier this year
It says about 235,000 travelers have flown the route since it launched.
Worryingly for Etihad, it says nearly half of Etihad’s customers begin or continue their journey on US code share flights operated by American.
"We are open to American Airlines reversing its decision to cancel our code-share agreement so that Etihad Airways can continue the route and together protect and support American national interests and global connectivity while driving commercial value for both airlines," said Baumgartner.
When it announced the scrapping of the codeshare agreement with Etihad, AA said it would have no financial impact on its bottom line and the decision was simply ‘an extension of our stance against illegal subsidies’ it claims Etihad and other Gulf carrier receive.
