Explore Worldwide launches CO2 emissions initiative

Wednesday, 05 Mar, 2003 0

Small group adventure specialist Explore Worldwide is providing every customer who books a holiday the opportunity to fly climate neutral.

Simon Tobin, Managing Director of Explore Worldwide said: “The biggest environmental downside of holidays is the flight. For example, on a holiday to India, each passenger is responsible for releasing nearly two tonnes of the global warming gas CO2 into the atmosphere – that’s as much the average Indian citizen is responsible for in two years.

“We are offering our passengers – many of whom we know to be concerned about responsible tourism – the chance to neutralise the adverse effects of their own air travel by making a personal contribution.”

The contributions will be made to environmental organisation Climate Care, which will use the funds to invest in projects involving renewable energy and reforestation which either reduce emissions at source or absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.

Recent examples of Climate Care’s projects include rainforest restoration in Uganda, giving low-energy light bulbs to poorer households in Mauritius and developing community-based micro hydro electricity projects in Bulgaria.

Explore has also pledged to counter damaging emissions from all flights taken by its staff and the electricity used at its office by making payments to Climate Care.

The work of Climate Care is scrutinised by an environmental Steering Committee, which includes members of leading NGOs (non governmental organisations) such as the WWF. The committee ensures that the projects deliver the environmental benefits that they claim. The table below gives examples of the emissions and contributions required to neutralise flights:
