Famous island attraction under threat
Cyprus: Thousands of birds in danger of lead poisoning
One of Cyprus’ biggest tourist attractions is under threat as many of the famous flamingos on Larnaca Salt Lake are dying of lead poisoning.
The problem seems to be occurring because the birds are eating pellets from a nearby shooting range; dozens of the birds are believed to have died in the last week or two.
Thousands of the pink birds visit the lake, close to the island’s south coast, and there are thought to be many thousands of the lead pellets in the lake.
According to the online news provider Ananova, some of the dead birds were found to have hundreds of the pellets in their stomachs. A director of Cypriot Veterinary Service stated that as few as six pellets could be enough to kill one of the birds.
