More people are considering renting a property for their holiday next year as they seek to get the best value for money, a new study shows.
But only one per cent of people said they would not be able to take a holiday in 2010 due to the economy, down from five per cent who said they were affected this year.
The poll by holiday rentals company HomeAway UK asked travellers how the financial situation would affect their holiday plans for next year.
Almost a quarter said they would book in advance to get a better deal; 22% will rent a holiday home as a bigger group to cut costs per head; 20% will rent a holiday home in the belief that it helps cut costs; 11% will choose a cheaper destination and 10% will look out for hotel specials and deals.
The number saying they will stay in the UK next year has declined to just two per cent for 2010 compared with nine per cent this year.
Half of holiday home owners said they planned promotions or discounts to continue to attract business in 2010. This came on the back of a year when 36% found more travellers were haggling for a discount.
The results were based on a survey of 340 responses from internal customer satisfaction questionnaires.
Of those travellers who stayed or will stay in a rental this year, 81% had previously stayed in a holiday home and 19% were first-time renters.
General manager Courtney Wylie said: “Traffic to our two UK sites, HomeAway.co.uk and sister site OwnersDirect.co.uk, was 13% greater in July 2009 v. January 2009, compared to a decrease of two per cent across travel sites in general.
“We expect this trend to continue even as the economy improves, as there has been a significant shift towards travellers seeking better value for their holiday pounds.”
