First Chinese Legoland park will rise in Shanghai

Merlin Entertainment announced China’s first outdoor Legoland park will debut in Shanghai.

The park will be built just outside the city at Dianshan Lake and is scheduled to open by 2022.

"The outdoor amusement theme park covering several hectares will promise a very fun experience," said Merlin Entertainments China’s channel marketing director Yang Shengjun.

Plans for the theme park were first mooted by UK based Merlin more than a year ago during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UK.

Shanghai already has an indoor Lego Discovery Centre.

Currently there is just one Legoland park operating in Asia, in Southern Malaysia, which opened in 2012.

Parks are also in the works for Japan and South Korea.
