Five dead in New York tour bus crash
The five tour bus occupants who died in a crash in New York State have been named.
Their tour bus was headed back to New York City from a trip to Niagara Falls.
The bus rolled over on Interstate 90 near Buffalo, New York on Friday and was carrying 54 people.
The victims were named as Pinki Changrani, 60, Zhang Xiaolan, 55 and Jian Mingli, 56, all from New Jersey.
Xie Hongzhuo, a 22-year-old student at Columbia University also died, as did Shankar Kumar Jha, 65, from India.
“This heartbreaking loss is felt deeply across our community. We are in close contact with her family and offering them our full support,” Columbia University said.
Many of the tourists on the bus were Indian, Chinese and Filipino.
More than 20 passengers were taken to hospital with various injuries.
Investigators said no other vehicle was involved.
They believe the driver may have got distracted and lost control of the bus.
He then overcorrected before the bus went into the shoulder lane and flipped over, said State Trooper James O’Callaghan.
The initial investigation has ruled out any mechanical issues with the bus.
The driver is cooperating with police.
