Five holiday clubs wound up in High Court

Wednesday, 10 Sep, 2003 0

Five so-called holiday clubs have been wound up in the High Court after an investigation by the DTI.

The clubs, which were closed down “in the public interest”, were The Travellers’ Guild, The Travellers’ Guild UK, Buckingham Leisure, Travel Concepts LLC and Riverside Travel. According to the DTI website, members of the public were encouraged to join the holiday club at a cost of between £1,800 and £4,995 to receive discounts on holidays
via password-protected websites www.thetravellersguild.com and www.conceptravel.com.

Of nearly £2 million that went into the Travellers Guild Limited bank account in Jersey between November 2001 and February 2003, less than £60,000 can be seen to have benefited customers, about half of which was used to maintain the website.

Members of the Travellers’ Guild and Travel Concepts holiday clubs were recruited through cold calling and invited to attend a sales presentation by Buckingham Leisure Limited. They were told that many of the discounted services on offer were available exclusively to The Travellers Guild Limited members. In fact most of them were accessible directly, without contact with the company.
