Flight restrictions to remain at Newark through 2025
Flight operations at troubled Newark Liberty Airport will remain restricted until the end of 2025 at least, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The flight cap limits arrivals and departures to 28 per hour on weekends from September 1 through December 31 during more airport construction work.
The limit was eased slightly to 34 flights per hour after runway work was completed ahead of time.
“The confirmed reduced rates will maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays at the airport due to staffing and equipment challenges,” the FAA said.
“The early completion of runway construction at the airport that added to the delays will also contribute to a more efficient operation.”
The airport had been plagued by weeks of disruption due to air traffic control staff shortages and outages.
FAA officials met recently with airlines to discuss the issues which led to an agreement on the flight restrictions.
The air traffic control system for the airport is based in Philadelphia.
The FAA said it is bolstering air traffic controller staffing with 22 more fully certified controllers and five supervisors.
Nationally, there is still an ATC staffing shortage of about 3,000.
