Flights cancelled as Typhoon Faxai pounds Tokyo

Wednesday, 10 Sep, 2019 0

Typhoon Faxai played havoc with travel in Japan, causing the cancellation of more than 100 flights, and stranding thousands of commuters.

Faxai, made landfall early Monday in Chiba City, dumping heavy rains and bringing winds of 120 miles per hour.

It then moved over the Tokyo area forcing flight delays.

Flights were back up late Monday at Narita International Airport but roads were closed and most train services suspended effectively stranding passengers at the airport.

Airport authorities said about 7,000 travellers were stuck at the airport.

Local media reported nearly one million households were still without power across impacted areas in Kanagawa, Shizuoka, and Tokyo prefectures.

Evacuation notices and storm surge warnings were rescinded by late Monday although strong winds are still expected as the typhoon slowly moves offshore over the Pacific Ocean.

Travel disruption is however still likely for most of Tuesday as airport operations slowly get back to normal and train services restart.

No deaths have been reported but at least 10 people were taken to hospital, news outlet NHK reported.
