FlyBe cash flash falls foul of footie fans
The budget carrier FlyBe has achieved welcome publicity through its sponsorship of Exeter City FC, after the club was drawn to play the mighty Manchester United in the next round of the FA Cup.
The tale, reported in The Guardian today, revolves around Exeter’s goal celebrations, which involved running around the pitch impersonating an aircraft.
FlyBe, as the team’s sponsor, pays a £1,000 bonus for any member of the side who scores a goal in their Conference matches and does the aeroplane impersonation.
Despite the team using the celebration all season, it has concerned followers of Manchester United, who complained that it would be disrespectful because of the 1956 Munich air disaster in which 21 people, including members of the team, died.
The Guardian reports that FlyBe is still planning to pay out £1,000 to anyone who scores against the “Red Devils”, but players are reportedly under strict orders not to spread their wings if they manage to hit the back of the net.
