A Fred.Olsen cruise passenger is thought to have drowned after falling into the English Channel.

The 79-year-old pensioner was reported missing as the cruise line’s Balmoral ship was coming back to Dover after a three week trip in the Adriatic.

The alarm was raised by the man’s wife after she woke to find her husabnd was missing.

A huge search operation failed to find the body of the man. A coastguard spokesman said he was last seen at about midnight and was not on board at 6am during which time the ship had travelled 100 miles.
