Fresh snow expected in the Alps after mild spell

Monday, 24 Feb, 2016 0

After an excellent half-term for skiers, conditions have become changeable again across the Alps. Heavy snow fell across much of the northern Alps on Saturday, before a rising freezing level saw this switch to rain during the afternoon. Since then there have been increasingly mild temperatures which has seen spring-like conditions affecting many resorts throughout Europe. The good news is that a cold front is on the way and could bring some fresh snow later in the week, so expect improving conditions as we get closer to the weekend.

Good conditions currently prevail across the Pyrenees, where some fresh snow has seen steady improvements over the weekend. Falling temperatures during the end of the week look likely to bring about some good snowfall over the weekend so expect conditions to only further improve over the coming week.

In Scandinavia the pick of the conditions can be found across Norway after some good snowfall over the course of the weekend. A largely sunny week ahead has been forecast which should provide the perfect conditions to enjoy the new snow.

In Scotland, sunshine on Monday is set to give way to snow during the middle part of the week so good times look likely to continue.

Eastern Europe has seen some small improvements in the last few days after some light snow fell across many resorts throughout much of Friday. Totals of around 5-10cm did much to cover the bare patches but more snow is desperately needed. Falling temperatures and light snow is forecast over the coming week which should see resorts get back on track over the coming days.

Some great skiing was on offer on both sides of Canada, with fresh snow reported in all three of the major skiing states – Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec. Almost every lift was open and most of the slopes were in very good condition on Thursday.

The USA continues to be in great shape after some good snowfall over the course of the weekend. Piste conditions are good throughout all regions, with pockets of fresh powder to be had off the piste also. A light dusting of snow is expected over the course of the week which should only see conditions further improve.
