Gatwick edges toward relaxing hand baggage rules
Gatwick has further partially relaxed single hand baggage restrictions but this is still limited to connecting flights.
The airport will now allow people to travel with more than one piece of hand baggage on connecting flights through the North Terminal, in addition to the South Terminal, subject to individual airline’s rules.
But the BAA airport said the one bag rule still remains in force for all other flights.
“This rule will be relaxed in the near future when the ongoing construction project to upgrade and expand the security facilities at the airport is completed,” a statement said.
The government’s deadline for all UK airports to be ready to relax single bag restrictions is May 31.
Gatwick created six new security lanes last July and a further seven new lanes will be open by Easter, giving a total of 35 – 21 in the South Terminal and 14 in North Terminal.
The airport has also recruited more than 450 new airport security officers in the past 12 months.
