GDS system aims to stem revenue losses

Amadeus has launched an automatic ticket re-issue system which it claims will stem airline losses incurred through manual processing.

The GDS said the current system, where tickets are changed and reissued manually by staff, is costing airlines millions in lost revenue as it fails to accurately calculate the cost of the new ticket and any penalty fares.

“It’s a complicated process and leads to revenue leakage,” said Amadeus senior manager Mark Ridley. “Tickets normally need reissuing at very short notice – such as when business travellers want to take an earlier flight home from a meeting – and there is pressure to get people on board the flight. During that process, not all the reissue costs, new fares or penalties incurred are collected.”

The new system, Amadeus Ticket Changer, will take seconds and automatically calculates the costs.

Air France, which has become the first carrier to adopt the system, said two million of its tickets are re-issued annually.

“It will enable us to collect fare penalties and other amounts relating to the modification of tickets more efficiently,” said vice president of distribution and e-commerce Henri Hourcade.
