Grass cutting causes delays at Manchester Airport
Passengers travelling from Manchester Airport have taken to Twitter to complain about big delays and long queues at security.
An estimated 324,000 holidaymakers passed through the airport over the weekend and extra security checks meant many were delayed by up to three hours getting through to the departure gates.
To add to the problems, tailbacks occurred when a lane on the spur road from junction 5 of the M56 was closed so the grass could be cut.
Passengers reported check-in queues had snaked out of the terminal building and into the car park on Friday.
Anika @anikaweiss tweeted: Something must have gone terribly wrong at Manchester Airport…. The queue for departures is OUTSIDE the terminal building!
In a statement, Manchester Airport customer services director Tricia Williams said 700 new security workers had joined across Manchester’s three terminals to help during the peak season.
Manchester council said ‘essential works’ including ‘clearing overgrown vegetation’ had been planned with the airport and Highways Agency, according to the Daily Mail.
Part of the motorway will be closed in both directions for much of next weekend, starting from 22:00hrs on Friday, August 1.
