Groupon enters 50 percent off travel market
Already known for its cheap local deals for food and beauty treatments, Groupon is targeting its next market: travel.
In what simplyzesty.com calls an “interesting move that makes complete and utter sense,” the site has teamed up with Expedia to offer “getaways.”
“The travel industry is one that is traditionally sold in bulk with package or charter holidays being especially popular at the lower end of the market. With billions of people traveling every single year and the internet being used to bring prices down Groupon might just have unlocked a massive new revenue stream in an area that nobody else was really focused yet,” the site says.
The site is launching later this month in the US and Canada.
Groupon claims that they will have 50 percent off the regular prices available on other sites. “Groupon Getaways with Expedia is a fitting complement to our local deals, helping people get out of the house and explore the world,” said Groupon CEO Andrew Mason in a statement.
Travel experts said Groupon already has huge databases of consumers all over the world and should be able to offer some attractive prices.
Consumers will have to be flexible about final destinations, however.
