Hawaii sending home travelers who violate self-quarantine
Hawaii has so far booted 19 visitors for breaking strict quarantine rules.
The tourists were sent packing for being unable to resist the lure of Hawaii’s beaches.
Some flights home are being funded by the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, a non-profit body which assists visitors in need of help.
So far the organization has spent $25,000 to send people home.
"During this unprecedented public health crisis, we are supporting the return of individuals who arrive from the mainland, who do not have pre-arranged lodging and may need financial assistance for their return flights," said VASH CEO Jessica Lani Rich.
Travelers are required to self-quarantine for 14 days and can be fined for any violation.
Some of those returned to the mainland were prosecuted for misdemeanors and fined.
One of the travelers sent home was caught out after posting on social media details of her outdoor adventures.
Earlier this month the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau asked travel publications not to run any Hawaii promotional content and anything written ‘strongly discourages travelers from visiting Hawaii until otherwise directed by our state officials.’
The state has reported 12 deaths from Covid-19.
