Heading to the US? Find out which cities charge tourists the most tax

Saturday, 12 Dec, 2013 0

The US cities that charge travellers the most tax have been named and shamed.

Research by Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) reveals visitors to Chicago pay the most.

For the lowest taxes, visitors need to head to the Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach.

The GBTA research looked at general sales taxes and discriminatory travel taxes to compile its list of the worst cities for taxes.

Taxes on elements such as hotel accommodation, car rental and restaurant meals amount to $41.04 per day for a traveler in Chicago.

The second highest taxes are in  New York ($38.65), followed by Minneapolis ($36.70); Kansas City ($36.61) and Indianapolis ($36).

Cleveland, OH; Boston; Seattle; Nashville and Houston make up the rest of the top10, with taxes per day ranging from $34.16 to $35.41.

In FL, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach they’ll typically pay only $22.61, $22.80 and $22.86 respectively.

GBTA says the money generated is regularly used to fund local projects unrelated to tourism and business travel.
