Health officials warn of Legionnaires risk at Bali hotel

Health officials in Western Australia have warned travellers to take extra precautions when dining at or staying at a prominent Kuta, Bali hotel.

WA Health Department director of communicable disease control Paul Armstrong issued the advisory for Ramayana Resort and Spa in central Kuta after the fourth Legionnaires’ disease case since February.

Armstrong said previous outbreaks occurred in 2010 and 2011 which affected 13 Australians.

Legionnaires’ disease can be serious for older people particularly with existing conditions such as lung disease, diabetes or with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms include fever, chills and headaches.

"Legionnaires’ disease is treated with specific antibiotics, and while most people recover, some may develop severe pneumonia requiring hospitalisation," Dr Armstrong said.
