“Hidden” cost of travelling abroad
Holidaymakers and business travellers are being “fleeced” by their banks while abroad, according to a newspaper report.
The Daily Mail says people are forking out hidden charges on credit cards and debit cards if they use them in other countries.
The paper says the charges are added every time someone makes a purchase or withdraws cash, and that spending just over £1,000 “on plastic” abroad can result in charges of £81 being applied.
The extra charges are to cover currency conversion and are not normally shown separately on people’s statements, the Daily Mail reports.
Eddy Weatherill of the Independent Banking Advisory Service, which lobbies on behalf of customers, is quoted by the paper as saying: “These charges are not clear, not fair and it is about time they stopped.”
