Holidaymaker wins GBP25,000 over doomed trip
Judge finds villa was “beneath” high standards expected by family
A woman who booked a dream holiday for the Millennium has been awarded £25,000 in compensation because of a “discrepancy” between what was advertised in a brochure and reality.
As reported by News From Abroad, Janet Keppel-Palmer splashed out £88,000 for a luxury trip to Barbados, where she had booked Villa Frangipani, near Bridgetown.
Despite the huge cost of the month-long holiday, Mrs Keppel-Palmer told the High Court there was glass missing from the windows of the house, there were leaks in the roof, and that she had to get up at 7.30 every morning to let in the cleaners.
The worst criticism was reserved for the “bufoon” of a butler. The court heard that he had to be told to wash his hands before serving food, and that though “when he put his mind to it he could make a good rum and fruit punch”, the butler was “no use at all”.
Awarding £25,000 to Mrs Keppel-Palmer, the judge told the court: “I take into account that on any view this was a very expensive holiday and she was entitled to expect very high standards. As I have found, what she got fell beneath these very high standards.”
Royal Westmoreland Villas, which organised the rental, was ordered to pay the “refund”, while Extus Travel, based in London, was found not liable by the court.
