Hotel offers deal where the colder, the lower

Here’s an unusual incentive to book an Alaska hotel in the winter: the Millennium Alaskan Hotel Anchorage announced a “Dollars for Degrees Deal” for December through February.

With rates starting at $100, guests will receive $1 off for each degree the temperature drops below freezing during their stay. Taxes and services fees are not included and the temperature will be measured at 1 p.m. The maximum discount is $30 per day.

Temperatures range from an average low of 20 F /-7 C in the winter, according to the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau. (The best chance for paying the lowest fare is probably in January, where the average high is 22 F (the record low is -35 F).

“Even warm-weather revelers (will) pull out their parkas to experience the beauty of the great outdoors,” claims the hotel.

However, there’s not much anyone can do about the winter days where there can be as much as 17 hours of darkness.
